Post-Class Task for Shrinking and Linking (Jason R. Levine)
This class was designed for a group of young learners and adults as well. The level is elementary students who are practicing simple past questions (Did you… ?) The class length is 60 minutes. But this lesson on reduction will take about 10 – 15 minutes. The number of students is 4.
We will practice the reduction of Did you [dɪdʒə], What did you [wədɪdʒə], How did you [haʊdɪdʒə]. Initially I would introduce these reduced questions along with appropriate sentences to contextualize it. For ex.: Did you watch TV last night? What did you do yesterday? How did you like the movie? After repeating and practicing the reductions, the students will ask a partner the first, and other two questions. In the second part of this class, the students will have two bags with sleeps of paper. The first bag will include copies of these questions: Did you…, What did you…, How did you… The second bag will have the complement of the questions. Such as: …go to school yesteday? …see your friend yesterday morning?…eat breakfast? …take a shower? …study last night? … feed your dog? …talk to your mother? These are a few suggestions and examples.
Some combinations might sound silly or funny. Therefore, in order to allow students to enjoy the activity, select funny endings for the questions, so they feel motivated to spend a good time on this activity, and finally practice this intended reduction.
